Another piece from my Kokeshi in Peril series. The dedication of this painting needs a bit of explanation. While working on this piece I received a phone call. The phone caller informed me of a friend of a friend who had died in Costa Rica by drowning while saving her child. I was so touched by this event that I dedicate this piece to Rhiannon and her memory.

Since moving from the vast openness and unlimited sky of the desert I've developed some dendrophobic tendencies. Dendrophobia is the fear of trees. I realized this was happening when putting together our hurricane kit I casually mentioned to my husband that may be we needed hard hats in the kit, in case trees where to fall on us post storm. It happens. Then when I would go biking in the woods I would glare up into the Live Oak Branches like they were the enemy. Finally, during a strong storm I saw a huge branch snap off a dead tree and almost hit a car on the high way. I felt disturbed to find out that the number one way people are killed or injured post hurricane isn't from power lines or falling off roofs but from falling tree branches. OK, maybe I just made that statistic up but it seems really true to me.

Don't get me wrong though, this fear of trees isn't as bad as my long time fear of seaweed. I've had a striking fear of creepy lake seaweed since I was a kid. I'm fine with seaweed on the beach or eating it in sushi but if I see it grasping for me while swimming I have a panic attack. I imagine it wrapping around my ankles and pulling me into the briny depths. An odd thing is that I happen to take photos of seaweed when ever I see it. I have photos of rain forest jungle seaweed in Costa Rica, swamp sea weed in the bayou as well as waxy north west seaweed in Puget Sound- I shutter to think about it now. Phytophobia or fear of plants is the closest scientific name for fear of seaweed. So between trees and plants, land and water, all those life forms that make oxygen must be out to get me.

Check out the tree in this photo I took. It is just GROWING like that! How can it not fall on someone eventually?
Please note this is right next to where I saw the branch fall in the road mentioned above.

We honored the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by attending our local parade. In Seattle, where I grew-up, the MLK event is more of a rally or march as opposed to he festivities yesterday here in Pensacola which were much more of a celebration. Nevertheless it was a beautiful day to honor Dr. King!

Recently I was delighted to find in my mailbox an (signed!) advance copy of my friend Alexis's debut novel Glaciers.

Glaciers is a poetic story of unrequited lust/love set in modern times with modern characters.

The kind of characters you feel you have met or have met in the past.

My absolute favourite aspect of Glaciers was the mythology Alexis creates around thrift stores and treasure hunting.

Glaciers is a wonderful, and engaging read!

I purchased this dark and murky oil painting of a land/seascape at an Estate Sale last week for $10.

The guy pulled it out of the furthest reaches of an old shed and I quickly snapped it up, mold and all.

It has no signature or date but I fancy it turn of the last century. After a gentle wipe down I find it oddly inspiring.

So much so that it is inspiration for a new body of work for 2012. I can't wait to see what art grows from this piece in the new year.

A wet walk in the San Franciscan rain brought us to the De Young Museum. Above are two photos of me, with flash and without, in front of Gerhard Richter's massive site specific commission, Strontium. The large-scale mural was created from 130 digitally manipulated photographs mounted on aluminum with a Plexiglass coating that together form a geometric black-and-white motif. Rosa teased that Stontium as a "magic eye" puzzle

. But as you can see from the photo below it kinda' is!

Also while at the De Young I saw the exhibition Dolls and Masks by photographer

I'm happy to announce that the Pensacola Museum of Art has invited me to be the featured artist for their monthly Culture Club event. I will be displaying pieces from my Golden Series. Select pieces of art will be available for purchase. Golden Series is the evolution of the imaginary hybrid "kokeshi-cactus" in an environment that blends both desert and seascape.

Culture Club will be from 5-7:30 on Thursday, December 1st and will feature music by the band Imaginary Air Show. The event is free.

I just got word that my magical mixed media piece below was juried into the 23rd Annual Cinco Banderas Art Competition at Artel Gallery in Pensacola. So not only will I have work in The Square Project in The Vault I will also have a painting in the main gallery! Artel Gallery is located in the Old Escambia county Courthouse at 223 Palafox Place, Pensacola FL.

Cinco Banderas opens this Friday night! I hope to see you there!

Dream is a jewelry maven based out of Albuquerque. Her work influenced by her travels to Indonesia. When she wanted a painting created in the vain of my Secret Landscapes paintings of course I drew inspiration from Indonesia as well as her jewelry.

My most resent Estate Sale discovery is this copy of the "Queen City Express". It is a radical independent newspaper published out of Cincinnati Ohio. This edition is dated 1970. This wonderful Ram Wallhook just arrived for me! It is by Wolfum, my friend Annabel Inganni's home, textile, et cetera line. Wolfum is designed and made in L.A. and has gotten quite a buzz since it's debut (think Martha Stewart magazine). I decided to hang my colourful ram's head in our kitchen next to my vintage tile collection. Nola assisted in this photo shoot playing stylist by adding items to hang on the pegs.

It is super exciting to brows over JANM's Facebook page photos from the opening reception and see my Labbit with all the other custom Labbits. Other awesome artists in the exhibition include Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Not to mention Pinata Labbit gets to kick it next to artist Stan Sakai's retrospective! I love Usagi Yojimbo!

Urban Light by Chris Burden

I took the top photo in SoFlo as we drove on a back road. It is of a lamp post collection in someone's yard. It instantly reminded me of the bottom photo taken when I went to LACMA in LA. Just goes to show there isn't much difference between an obsessive collection and art.

Today, at an Estate Sale, I picked up this odd item. It is a hand stitched pillow, wrapped in plastic, signed by THE Gloria Vanderbilt (Anderson Cooper's MOM)!

I HAD TO HAVE IT. I clutched it to my chest, my heart pounding muffled by only the pillow itself. In a daze I looped the estate sale one last time then forked over my last $5 for the pillow.

I don't know anything about this piece of Americana other than what a small newspaper clipping pinned to that reads,

"Meet Gloria Vanderbilt and be personally introduced to her fabulous fall fashions. Tuesday, September 12, informal modeling.

Northland 12:30 to 2, Fairlane 3:30 to 4:30.

Receive a coupon entitling you to a Gloria Vanderbilt canvas bag with any purchase of a new Gloria Vanderbilt shirt or jeans'.

Then it is signed by Ms. Vanderbilt and dated "Sept. 12, 1978".

What I do know is that this find has provenance!

I'm definitely taking it to Antiques Roadshow!

It seems to me that as long has there have been great artists there has been a cat by their side. It is almost a cliche. So that got me thinking about just how much feline schmutz there must be in there work. Cat hair encased in paintings like a fly in amber. Ew.

I knew when I picked up my glue gun yesterday that something was different. It felt lighter. As I was plugging her in I thought to myself about how long I've had her. It has been at least 7 or 8 yrs of good solid regular use before yesterday. As I worked on my project my glue gun kept going cold on and off. It blew the fuse twice before it made a popping sound and sparked (thank goodness while not in my hand). So I changed sockets at which time she blew the fuse that is connected to the fridge. I didn't have the heart to do it so my husband declared her "dead". As she cooled down I used her till the end. Till the very last of her heat was gone from her tiny blue plastic body. Thank you gluey for all your loyalty over the years.

Rest in Peace.
